Abstract
Of the literature reviewed, most research studies on person—environment were specifically conducted within the contexts of school, work and health care. Little research in this regard has been undertaken within the prison context. Moreover, the person—environment congruence concept has, as yet, only been linked to rehabilitation in health care settings. One of the major aims of imprisonment, namely, rehabilitation has been criticized for largely failing in its aim. The use of transactional classification was proposed in an attempt to improve rehabilitation through application of the person—environment congruence concept within the prison setting.
