Abstract
When used for measuring global life-satisfaction in Black and White South Africans, English and Afrikaans versions of the Index of Well-being, a nine-item semantic differential designed by Campbell, Converse and Rodgers (1976), was highly internally consistent. There were also some indications of discriminant and convergent validity. The only significant findings regarding relationships between life-satisfaction and demographic variables were a main effect for ethnic group and an interactive effective for ethnic group, sex and age. Scores on well-being were noticeably lower for Black Women between the ages of 25 and 39 years than for any other subgroup.
