Abstract
This discussion assesses models of cognitive structure and the contribution of Louis L. Thurstone. Two types of models are considered in the light of the available empirical evidence and special attention is given to the work of J.P. Guilford and Joseph R. Royce. While there is no conclusive evidence favouring either type of model, it seems probable that a hierarchical model which allows for interaction at each level and between different levels may eventually provide a viable solution. In this respect, Thurstone is seen as having provided the main empirical grounds on which subsequent theories were built.
