Endoscopic sclerotherapy has gained the upper hand in the treatment of bleeding oesophageal varices. The procedure is safe and the complications are transient. In this centre 25 cases were treated with sclerotherapy, using Varigloban 8% as the sclerosing agent. Bleeding was controlled in all 25 patients and varices were obliterated in 24. There were 9 recurrences at a mean of 15 months. It can be assumed that sclerotherapy eradicates oesophageal varices satisfactorily for a minimum period of one year.
