Abstract
Millions of people depend on carpet weaving for their livelihood, so there is a good reason to preserve and encourage the carpet weaving industry, not only in Rajasthan, which is its hub, but also, throughout the country. The situation of the weavers, this study shows, is pathetic; they are handicapped by illiteracy, inadequate finance, and marketing bottlenecks. Marketing and finance facilities should be provided to the artisans to save them from the clutches of contractors, and banks should be motivated to provide short-term loan to weavers on the basis of physical assets. Also, the government should undertake extensive and intensive promotional efforts for carpets by strengthening the Rajasthan Carpets and Woollen Product Development Society (RCWPDS).
