Abstract
This paper examines the nature and concerns of environmental discourse and action in India and locates them within the politics and sociology of knowledge. We examine the gaps in research and the lack of attention to certain issues relating to the macropolitics of environment are examined. The paper ends up by suggesting specific areas and questions which need to be explored to deepen our understanding of this politics, especially to facilitate the emergence and institutionalisation of a democratic politics of the environment.
