Abstract
Ideologies in the former Eastern bloc countries deter mined all activities, including tourism. This article, written by an author who lived for several years in East Germany, is first of all a historical reflection. It is also an attempt to preserve information from that time period (i.e., information published in the mid-1980s is apparently considered embarrassing, and efforts were made to restrict its further use). These historical reflections will examine the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and the German Democratic Republic. The following topics are discussed: organizations of tourism, handling of statistics and budgets, ideologies, and barriers erected against Western travelers.
