A Kluge bibliography cannot be attempted here. Since the initial version of this article was written a good monograph on Kluge with a Substantial, if incomplete bibliography has appeared: Rainer Lewandowski, Alexander Kluge (Munich, 1980). The central works of Kluge (excluding his films) are, to my mind, the followng: Lebenslaufe Anwesenheitsliste fur eine Beerdigung (Frankfurt, 1974); Lernprozesse mit todlichem Ausgang (Frankfurt, 1973); Neue Geschichten, Hefte 1-18: "Unheimlichkeit der Zeit" (Frankfurt, 1977); Schlachtbeschreibung : Der organisatorische Aufbau eines Unglucks (Munich, 1978; the latest and, to my mind, best edition); Die Patriotin. Texte/Bilder 1-6 (Frankfurt, 1979); with Oskar Negt, a theoretical work, Öffentlichkeit und Erfahrung (Frankfurt, 1972). A further theoretical work with Negt has recently appeared, with the characteristic title of Geschichte und Eigeensinn (Frankfurt, 1981 ); this latter work (1300 pages long) has already caused a major stir, not least because it further attacks the traditional boundaries of academic discourse.
