This is no doubt also partly because none of these terms is as comprehensive as Aufklärung. The term ‘Enlightenment', for example, gained much of its present meaning only in the nineteenth century under the influence of the German, and in the eighteenth century, some of the programmatic significance of Aufklärung can only be conveyed by additional words in other languages such as ‘improvement', philosophie, etc. This does not mean, of course, that the practical issues associated with Aufklärung in religion, politics, education, etc. were debated any less vehemently in other countries: see, for example, Richard Herr, The Eighteenth-Century Revolution in Spain (Princeton, 1958), 84, 201-35, and 361.

“The philosophical peasant” is another interesting case of redefinition, by the opponents of Aufklärung, of a term originally used by the Aufklärer themselves.
