"Maccabee, Maccabee, donkey's head and Jew's behind!" I owe this information to my mother, Guiseppina Zaccaro Canepa, a native of Asti. In spite of its etymology, the term maccabeo in Italian and Piedmontese did not carry any connotation of Jew but denoted rather a stupid and ugly person. Cf. Prof. Anna Colombo , in a letter of 16 November 1978, tells me that an attribution of various physical deformities characterized the popular image of the Jew in Italy well into the present century, and that thus the reference to "cu d' 'n abreu" probably reflects this tradition.
