The addresses given on speech day by W. G. Sebald’s headmaster give a clear insight into the highly idealistic Christian/humanist ethos that informed, or at least was supposed to inform, Sebald’s educational background. At a time when the NS-Zeit was less than two decades in the past, the stress is on peace, ethical commitment that is grounded in Christianity, public service and moral/spiritual self-improvement.
