Young Nigerians' perceptions of the qualities of a “good husband” and a “good wife” were examined. Results indicated that relationships were more frequently mentioned than personal characteristics or roles. Kinship relations were perceived to be an important aspect of the marital relationship. The influence of gender roles was noted. Caring was more frequently used than love when referring to relationships. The results emphasize the need to consider perceptions of intimate relationships in cultural context.
