This article tests hypotheses from two perspectives, lineage socialization and generation unit, on Korean student protest participation, using 360 self-administered questionnaires collected at three Korean universities in the fall of 1991. Logistic response models were used to examine the influence of qualitative variables on protest behavior. Results indicate that both theoretical perspectives are not mutually exclusive in explaining the characteristics of student protest participants. However, the findings lend stronger support to the generation unit model. The presence of a strong horizontal age-group bond in Korean society influences students' political orientations and subsequently their protest behavior. The common denominator that binds these student protesters appears to be generational consciousness. The data also indicate that agents other than parents, such as peers, mentors, media, and so forth affect the process of (re)socialization to politics in this Korean student sample.
