The immigrant population residing in New York City has expanded enormously in recent years and profoundly affected the public school system. As significant as the expansion of immigrant students enrolled in New York City public schools has been, even more remarkable is the diversity in the countries of origin of the new students. This article looks at some of the problems faced by the New York City public schools in absorbing and educating a surge of immigrant children. Insight into the educational problems encountered by immigrant students is provided through student and teacher interviews.
