Abstract
“We are material, and as a piece of matter we are vulnerable to injury, illness, and decay. … To accept to any degree our status as a piece of matter is, paradoxically, to transcend to that extent being merely a piece of matter. … We are not encompassed completely by the principles that govern the rest of matter. In this sense, we are spiritual beings.”
