Abstract
“Each of the three phenomena we are examining—glossolalia, Quaker silence, and liturgical worship—exhibits a kind of strangeness or peculiar style as over against more usual religious and secular activities. … From time immemorial, saints and mystics have witnessed to the fact that a certain letting go, a being open to, is a necessary requirement for deeper experiences of the presence and power of God.”
