Abstract
THESIS: The climate of disenchantment that pervades the church and world today may be the very challenge to awaken Christians from comfortable slumbers. When secular prophets say, “God is dead,” those who have a faith rooted in the God of the biblical saga are given opportunity for a new kind of dialogue with their contemporaries. This new dialogue cannot proceed in outmoded language, nor can it be supported by patterns of church life conformed to an age that is past. No clear strategy is apparent for the coming generation of church life but one “stage direction” is crystal clear: The windows of the church must be opened to let the astringent and invigorating air currents of the modern era blow into our oft-times stifling religious conclaves. A this-worldly, rather than an other-worldly, gospel is the option for the present age.
