Abstract
The Christian church today remains shockingly bereft of a prophetic and authoritative message in bearing witness to a capitalist society. Christian teachings are ad hoc, emphasizing altruism, honesty, and perhaps social justice, as if we have already conceded the autonomy of the economic system to which Christianity has these few reminders to offer. This essay seeks to understand the essence of capitalist society through a normative theological lens of creation and covenant. It offers a critical interpretation of liberal capitalism and in particular its current state of affairs as part of a historical process of increasing deviation from the Christian norm.
