‘The Jews’ and Jesus: an Anglican perspective on the language of Holy Week

Abstract

This article discusses whether the liturgical language of ‘the Jews’ is fit for purpose in the twenty-first-century church, and in doing so reflects on a tension found at the heart of the Christian faith. Questions of meaning, both textual and ecclesiological, are considered, and the question is asked as to whether liturgical changes in language are needed if the Christian church is to engage with its evangelizing and contextual role appropriately.
