Abstract
Unlike in Luke, in Matthew’s Gospel Jesus calls the disciples to ‘be teleios’. This article argues that teleios ought not to be translated as ‘perfect’ but instead means something closer to ‘boundless’ or ‘unconditional’. This retranslation has a knock-on effect in understanding Jesus’ response to the rich young ruler: ‘If you wish to be perfect …’
