Abstract
The portrait that the National Portrait Gallery has recently acquired of John Donne is considered in the light of some of his earlier poems, and the suggestion is made here that John Donne’s relationship with Magdalen Herbert was more significant to him than has previously been argued; that they had a passionate friendship that lasted until her death, which was formative on his religious development and his vocation to Anglican orders.
