Abstract
Dale Martin’s Pedagogy of the Bible sets out a vision for a revised approach to Christian formation that is focused around some traditional modes of Bible reading. The loss of such traditional modes of reading is traced via Hans Frei’s analysis of Scripture as a literal and ascriptive text, an understanding ‘eclipsed’ in modern times, including in the seminary. It is suggested that seminary teachers might consider turning to scriptural exemplars of reading Scripture to develop their approach. Sample studies are Psalm 1, Daniel 9 and Luke 24.
