Abstract
The retreat is a devotion which was borrowed from the Roman Catholic Church and its form has always been dependent upon that church. This article surveys three periods of its development within the Church of England. The first is the making of it that church's own, the second its popularization during the first half of the twentieth century and the third is its diversification and decline in use in recent years.
