Abstract
A new computer simulation and analysis method is presented for determining the damage progression and failure strength of nonwoven fabrics, whose failure is mainly caused by fiber rupture. The model is based on the fiber rupture criterion. The finite element method is used to calculate the numerical solution of stress and strain distribution in different regions of the samples during fabric breaking. The model is able to predict the load at which the first fiber breaks, the number of isolated fiber breaks prior to catastrophic fabric failure, the critical crack length upon catastrophic failure, and the tensile strength of the fabric. Tensile testing is done on several nonwoven fabrics to verify the computer simulated results, which are in good agreement with the experimental results.
