Abstract
Cotton fabric was mercerized with LiOH, NaOH, and KOH solutions at the con centrations of maximum swelling for mercerized cotton fiber. The kinetics and acti vation parameters of the reaction between cellulose (unmercerized and mercerized) and the crosslinking agent were calculated. Rate constants for cotton fabrics were higher than that for unmercerized cotton. Values for ΔH*, ΔS*, and ΔG* for each fabric reveal that the swelling degree of cotton does affect the reaction state, but doesn't affect the energy consumption of the reaction between cellulose and crosslinking agent.
