Imperfections in yams are serious flaws that greatly detract from the quality. They are classified into three categories according to their linear density variations. With a view to studying the physical nature of various imperfections, we investigated carded and combed yarns, estimating correlations between diameter and mass of various imperfections and analyzing the composition of thin and thick places and neps. We identified the major factors responsible for different categories of imperfections.
