Abstract
Research on experimental fabrics knitted from yams containing cotton and common milkweed fibers has been extended to selected swelling treatments. Results are presented on the response of cotton / milkweed blends to caustic and ammonia mercerization, and to subsequent crosslinking. The physical properties of the mercerized fabrics are described before and after crosslinking with dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea. Dif ferences are noted on the morphology and chemical properties of the cotton and milkweed fibers after the chemical treatments.
