Studies on the weight loss from wool, over an extended range of sulfuric acid con centrations and temperatures, have shown that there is a critical concentration for sulfuric acid and its effects on wool. Sulfuric acid droplets spread on wool when the concentration exceeds 40% under drying conditions. The concentrated acid causes locally damaged areas that do not exhibit the Allworden reaction. A low weight loss was observed in the treated wool for drying temperatures below 70°C, even for high sulfuric acid concentrations. Thus lower drying temperatures before baking in car bonizing could minimize damage to the wool.
