Abstract
Methods are described for determining the binder and fiber contents of nonwoven fabrics bonded with a polyester binder and containing either carbon fibers or a blend of carbon and polyester fibers. The amounts of fiber and binder in a nonwoven made with only carbon fibers are determined by weighing the fibers after removing the binder with concentrated sulfuric acid. Analysis of a nonwoven containing a blend of carbon and polyester fibers is accomplished by removing the binder with 70% sulfuric acid and weighing the total fibers. Then the fibers are treated with concentrated sulfuric acid and the carbon fibers are weighed.
