The formation of neps during the cotton yarn manufacturing process is a continuing problem. Fiber characteristics and processing conditions affect nep formation. Four methods of nep determination are compared: nep board counts from card web during carding, mounted card web samples counted with a template-defined viewing area, a nep test machine that resembles a miniature card, and yam neps. The comparison shows the four methods provide similar results.
