Abstract
A wide variety of reagents was explored in an attempt to obtain a satisfactory and cheap method for neutralizing wools flame retarded with fluorozirconate and fluo rotitanate. Conventional reagents are unsatisfactory, either because they adversely affect the flame-retardant finish or because they impair durability to laundering. Potential procedures involve the use of 10% solutions of sodium acetate, 1% sodium acetate in aqueous alcoholic solutions, or amines in dry-cleaning solvents. The use of dilute ammonia or amines in aqueous solutions destroys the flame retardant finish without removing zirconium from the fiber.
