A number of combinations of staining and embedding procedures have been investigated to determine which are the most suitable for TEM studies of oxidatively shrinkproofed wool fibers. The site of attack on the wool fibers by the KMnO4/salt shrinkproofing treatment, as applied in the laboratory, was found to be the scale tips. The histochemistry of the various staining reactions is discussed.
