A small percentage of long fiber belts in a short-staple rotor-spun yarn improves the strength of the yarn, due to the reinforcement of yarn matrix through belts. It is observed that these long belts extend during tensile straining of the yarn and thereby increase the lateral compression on the yarn matrix. Cyclic stressing at 60% of average breaking extension shows that the presence of long fiber belts restricts fiber slippage during axial straining and reduces the extent of permanent deformation. The removal of belts of long fibers tends to produce similar tenacities in the cotton core.
