Abstract
Four pqlymorphs of ramie cellulose, ramie I, II, IIII, and IVI, are characterized by electron microscopy imaging and diffraction. Darkfield imaging of native ramie shows the crystallites as discrete rods of dimensions 5 X 30 nm. After 'the polymorphic transformations, isolated ramie microfibrils exhibit a morphology similar to that of the native micro fibrils. The morphology of the microfibrils in the core of fibrillar bundles is less clear. The results are interpreted in retation to the question of the parallelism of the cellulose chains in native celluloses.
