Improving Gin-Lint Cleaning for the Removal of Open-End Spinning Microdust

Abstract

The introduction of open-end spinning into the textile processing system has increased the need for better cotton fiber cleaning before spinning. The use of gin-type lint cleaners, either at the cotton gin or at the textile mill, offers possi bilities for providing much of the cleaning required for efficient open-end spinning performance and yarn quality. Modi fications evaluated'include increases in licker-in (saw cylinder) speed, increases in combing ratio, and decreases in batt weight. Machine performance data and fiber and open-end yarn property data are reported, along with results of a statistical examination of differences between normal and modified operating conditions. Lint cleaner modifications improved cleaning efficiency and slightly lowered turbine residue but increased lint wastage during lint cleaning. Modi fications had no significant effect on open-end yarn properties.
