Abstract
The average fiber diameters for 113 scoured 1/2-inch (13 mm) core samples were determined using the Sonic Fineness Tester developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Australia and a con version table based on cut and carded wool tops. A comparison of these measurements with measurements determined by the short fiber (microprojection) method showed that Sonic values were coarser for fine wools and finer for coarse wools. A quadratic regression formula based on short fiber measurements of the 1/2-inch (13 mm) cores was used to prepare a con version table to estimate average fiber diameter from millivolt readings on the CSIRO Sonic Fineness Tester.
