The sorption of solubilized water by cellulose from perchloroethylene is an exothermic process below an activity of 0.8 and the sorption isotherms are sigmoidal in shape, as is also true when water is taken up by cellulose in conventional humid atmospheres. The diffusion coefficient of solubilized water increases exponentially with activity of water and with tem perature. The sorption and diffusiun of water from the solubilized state into cellulose thus can be controlled ftom a consideration of fundamental principles of thermodynamics and kinetics.
