Approximately 50% by weight of all ily released from a carded cotton yarn during knitting is deposited at the cone- unwinding point. Most of this fly consists of short fibers 2 mm or less in length. Normal yarn lubrication using wax has no signficant effect on either the amount or composition of deposited fly. Slashing yarns with a polyvinyl alcohol- based product reduces fly quantity significantly but is an impractical solution to the problem.
