Cellulose treated with phosphorus-halogen flame retardants was thermally decomposed and the products separated and identified with a GC-MS combination. Addition of more phosphorus compounds to the mixtures caused changes in both the number and amounts of halogen compounds observed. The phosphorus apparently has an effect on how the decomposition of the halogen-containing retardant occurs.
