The relation between permanent and imposed deformation for the compression side of mercerized cotton fiber can be obtained from measurements of the crease recovery angle of the fiber and comparable measurements of the permanent deformation after tensile loading.
A simplified model suffices to obtain an acceptable balance between exlrerimental accuracy and theoretical refinement. There appear to be large differences in permanent deformation dependent on the level of stretching after merrerization and the application of crosslinks in the fiber.
