The fluorozirconate treatment of wool has been investigated. It appears that a negatively charged tetrafluorozirconium species is exhausted onto wool, the natural flame-resist properties of which are markedly improved. Even levels of the zirconium species can be obtained at room temperature by slowly reducing the pH of the dyebath. Observations are recorded concerning the location of the zirconium compound in the fiber and its mode of action in flame-retardation.
