Irradiation of an aqueous solution of the trans-isomer of disodium 4,4'-diacetamidostilbene-2,2'-disulfonate causes isomerization to the cis-form, reduction to the corresponding 1,2-diphenylethane, and oxidative cleavage to the corresponding aldehyde and carboxylic acid. When applied to wool prior to irradiation, the same products are formed, but in different proportions.
