A new technique is described for determining the sign of the surface charge of flexitile fibers in contact with an aqueous solution. The yarn or single fiber sample hangs freely between platinum electrodes. The motion of the sample tip, magnified with a projection microscope, is observed when an electric dc field is applied. The technique is used for mea suring the isoelectric pH of natural and of chemically modified wool.
