Abstract
A 10 watt, infrared, CO2 gas laser providing precisely controlled, highly localized heating has heen used to create thermal bonds between crossed polypropylene monofilaments. Scanning electron micrographs of the bond interface after bond destruction have shown that the bond failed cohesively in the surface layers of the two fiber. The bonding technique will be used in an extensive study of the factors controlling the formation of proper bonds.
