Treatment of fabrics containing polyester with strong alkali (of saponification strength) imparts pigment soil-release properties equivalent to those obtained by conventional Soil-Release finishes. The soil-release effect achieved by alkali treatment has excellent fastness to repeated washings. Their washfastness indicates some modification of the chemical constitution of the fiber surface as a result of the partial surface saponification; this is also indicated by an increased wetta bility.
