Fibrous chlorodeoxycellulose with a D.S. as high as 0.3 can be prepared by reacting alkali-activated cotton yarns with thionyl chloride in dimethylformamide at room temperature. The resultant yarns possess the same tensile strength as untreated yarn and increased rot resistance. The chlorodeoxycellulose yarns can be converted into new fibrous cellulose thioethers, such as carboxymethylthiocellulose (Cell-S-CH 2- COOH). The yarns can also be converted into cross-linked diaminodeoxycelluloses by reaction with primary aliphatic diamines.
