Abstract
Form-persuasive garments are new lightweight briefs and panty girdles which use 40-140-den spandex yarns and have a level of control intermediate between stretch nylon panties and conventional high-support foundations. This work was done to provide a basic understanding of the functionality of these garments and to provide a basis for proper garment design. Consumer tests showed high interest in this concept, and a new market potential exists for form-persuasive garments to complement the high-sup port segment of the foundation market, particularly for casual wear and sportswear . and for subjects requiring relatively minor adjustments to their figures. The major functional contribution of form-persuasive garments is to provide geometric adjustments and dynamic control of the body approaching that of high-support foundations but with about 60% of the constraint. The required levels of fabric extension were specified, and expressions were derived and confirmed by actual wear tests to predict these levels. Definitions were also furnished for preferred levels of garment support to provide wearer identi6able geometric and dynamic adjustments to the body. Several new tests were developed to identify garment pressure and body responses to varying support levels. A modified fabric test was also proposed.
