Abstract
The complex material extracted from hair by ethanol can be detected by its ability to reduce the rate at which papain degrades alcohol-extracted hair. It has been shown to have unusual electrophoretic properties, and has been tentatively identified as con taining both protein (with a very high level of lysine) and fatty acid. It is believed to function by presenting a hydrophobic surface to the enzyme solution.
