Abstract
Wool fibers that have been reduced and S-methylated completely recover their length from very high levels of supercontraction, when the contracting reagent (8 M LiBr solution) is removed by washing, provided no second-stage supercontraction has taken place. The amount of recovery decreases sharply with increase in second-stage super-contraction. Recovery is marked by restoration of an α-type x-ray diagram. It appears that recovery is not solely due to restoring forces exerted by bonds originally formed in equilibrium with the native state.
