Durable Water Repellency by Chemical Bonding of Silicones 1

Abstract

Silicones are used by the textile industry primarily to impart durable water repellency and a unique, soft hand to fabrics. To permit silicone water repellency to better withstand the severe laundering conditions to which cotton textiles are normally subjected, a bifunctional coupling agent was synthesized for use with standard textile emulsions. This siloxane polymer contains siloxane-reactive and cellulose-reactive groups which give it the potential of reaction with both the silicone water repellent film and the cotton surface. Its effect is apparent in the greater laundering durability of the properties imparted to the cotton by the silicone. The use of the coupling agent in silicone water-repellent systems for cotton is illustrated by data from laboratory and commercial finishing plant trials.
